Knock, Knock! Who’s There?

Maple is one lucky canine—she has upgraded from a studio unit to a one-bedroom en suite, all without having to pay a single dime or taking out a home loan.
When Maple first joined us in our apartment, MM and I assembled her crate in the same manner that the previous owner accustomed her to (that is, an open-concept playpen in which her sleeping quarters and toilet were one). Soon enough, however, Maple made a huge mess of her home—she would skillfully remove the newspaper lining from within her pee tray and tear it into shreds. MM and I realized that this would become a nightly affair, so we decided it was time to improve Maple’s personal living space for her own well-being and for the sake of our sanity.
We began by re-constructing Maple’s crate into its original rectangular form. Maple’s crate has two doors to allow for front and back entry. We removed the back door and built an extension leading into her toilet area. For the walls of the extension, we bought three pieces of 50cm x 50cm plastic outdoor tiles (S$5 per piece) from a local garden centre and secured them together with cable ties. The pee tray fits perfectly into this new space; now, Maple can still have 24/7 access to the pee tray but not be able to dismantle it like before. Moreover, the plastic outdoor tiles provide adequate screening so Miss. Little Red Maple Leaf can enjoy some privacy while doing her business!
As a finishing touch, we added a mini whiteboard (S$2 from Daiso) on which to record information so that we don’t forget important dates. Occasionally, Maple will also announce her mood-of-the-day for all to see.
