Being raised in an urban environment, Miss Little Red Maple Leaf is a city slicker through and through. Maple loves the sights, sounds, and smells of busy sidewalks, shopping bags filled with fabulous finds, lattes being sipped al fresco, and passersby in trendy weekend wear. As there was a pet event happening in the city this past Saturday, MM and I thought it would be a good opportunity to free Maple from ‘suburbia’. [Note: The city-state of Singapore is essentially a super-planned network of high-density urban developments so the term, ‘suburbia’, is used very loosely here!]
Held on the grounds of the Singapore Management University (SMU) city campus, the SMU student club, People for Animal Welfare (PAW), organized a day-long pet event for animal lovers that included fun competitions and educational programs. Registration was S$2 and each pet got to go home with a hamper bag filled with lots of sample treats—Maple loves freebies as much as a shopping spree!
[Afternote: Maple, who left the apartment with a bed-head and all, was probably wishing secretly that her Momsy and Popsy had dolled her up just a tad for her first debut in Singapore’s downtown district.]
With the announcement that the obedience training demonstration was about to begin, we found ourselves a spot on the steps and settled in for the show. As the crowd grew more and more mesmerized by the ease in which the adorably cute canine participants completed their routines, I couldn’t help but sink into an inferiority complex while envisioning Maple’s sporadic episodes of naughtiness. *sigh* That’s our little rascal for you!
Dog-sightings in Singapore’s downtown core are still quite rare, but that isn’t going to stop us from planning our next excursion with Maple into the city. Perhaps Maple’s next urban adventure will be window shopping with Momsy down the infamous Orchard Road!
