Stay-At-Home Movie Night

March 18, 2011 § 4 Comments

In the past, before the arrival of Miss Maple, MM and I would rent a movie (or two or three) and watch it over a long weekend. These days, we consider ourselves lucky if we can catch thirty minutes of the evening news let alone remain fixated for a two-hour long movie. You see, Maple is simply not a couch potato and would protest if MM and I divert our eyes away from her even for a split second: “What can possibly be more entertaining than me?” she would ask with her big round eyes.

So it was a pleasant surprise, when one Friday night, we brought home a movie that peaked Maple’s interest. That movie, of course, is none other than Hachiko: A Dog’s Story (2009).

Maple could not part her eyes from the Akita(s) that played the role of Hachi—she was smitten by Hachi’s good looks and loyalty towards his adoptive pawrent, Professor Parker Wilson, played by Richard Gere. Maple went in and out of slumber throughout the movie, but each time Hachi entered the scene Maple would sit up straight and squint at the plasma screen as if she were whispering sweet nothings via telepathy.

Hachiko: A Dog’s Story is certainly not an action-thriller, so the plot tends to chug along like a slow-moving train which allowed me to sit back as a passenger and enjoy the scenery—MM has a different opinion, but then again he’s not the one writing this review! I was happy to see a Poodle making an appearance in the movie. I won’t divulge where exactly this happens, except to say that it is a very cute scene!
The only aspect of the cinematography that I found a little puzzling is when the camera flips so that the movie-watcher gets a view of the world through the eyes of Hachi (complete with canine vision colour adjustments). All in all, I enjoyed Hachiko: A Dog’s Story for its endearing storyline. Towards the end of the movie, I was bawling my eyes and fumbling desperately for tissue in the dark. It made me rethink how lucky MM and I are to have a special four-legged companion who always finds her way into our hearts each and every day!

To the survivors and victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, may you find courage and solace through humanity in this most devastating time. And lest we forget the helpless furry ones whose homes have perished and whose owners may never return—may they find comfort in the arms of others.

  • We haven’t seen this movie yet…so interesting that Maple perked up during the Hachi scenes!

  • TOto's mommy says:

Nowadays we have to bring TOto for a run in the dogpark to tire him out before we can have our movie night!

Oh ya, Another must watch Dog movie, ‘A tale of Mari and her 3 puppies!’ Don’t know whether you watch that, but that is based on a real story in Japan of a earthquake and shiba inu!

    Have a nice weekend ahead!

    • Thanks for recommending A Tale of Mari and Three Puppies—it sounds new to me. I’ll definitely check out our local video rental store to see if they have copies. And, yes, I think we may have to bring Maple out to the dog run or go for a looooong walk before we can watch a movie in peace and quiet 🙂 LOL… You have a terrific weekend, too!
